Through Unity, Strength: The Latin term “Per Unitatem Vis” translates to “Through Unity, Strength.” This motto is used by the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets, signifying the importance of unity and teamwork for achieving strength and success.
Over the last year and a half, groups of different stakeholders with the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels were tasked with defining our “Rebel” mascot. What does it mean to be a Rebel? Our mascot is different, it’s unique, and it’s been our identity since the two schools formed a sports cooperative 40 years ago. Throughout this process, we engaged students, parents, faculty, and community members to gather a diverse range of perspectives. We explored the values that embody the spirit of a Rebel. This collaborative effort not only reinforced our pride in our history but also allowed us to envision how our mascot can inspire future generations. As we move forward, we aim to ensure that the Rebel spirit continues to resonate within our community, uniting us in our pursuit of excellence both on and off the fields, courts, and rinks.
After many meetings, classes, trials and errors, we’ve defined what it means to be a Rebel in the Moose Lake/Willow River communities:
The Rebels embody the spirit of the original American Patriots—individuals who stood up for their beliefs and fought for the rights of the oppressed. As we embrace our mascot's legacy, we honor the values of courage, resilience, and justice that the Rebels represent. Rebels are not afraid of tough times; instead, Rebels unify and fight. They remind us that our communities are stronger together than apart. This message of unity inspires our students to be leaders and advocates for change, fostering a positive environment where all voices are heard.
We truly believe that together we are stronger. As we celebrate the last 40 years of our cooperative, we also look forward to the next 40 years of our communities becoming stronger.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the Rebels’ rich heritage and the important lessons they teach us about standing up for what is right. Together, let’s promote the spirit of unity and empowerment that our new, defined mascot symbolizes.
